This research aims to study the adsorption of chromium ion using chitosan in fixed bed column. The adsorbent prepared from crosslinking of chitosan, sodium tripolyphosphate was used as crosslinking agent. The spherical beads with the diameter of 2.5 mm were achieved. The continuous adsorption was carried out in the fixed bed column. The effect of feed flow rate (150, 250 and 350 cm3/h), bed height (5, 10 and 15 cm) and initial chromium concentration (1, 2 and 3 ppm) on the breakthrough curve were investigated. The chromium solution was fed at the bottom and chromium effluent was collected at the top of column. The chromium concentration was determined by colorimetric technique with UV-Vis spectrophotometer at wavelength of 540 nm. The results showed that breakthrough time increased with increasing bed height, decreasing feed flow rate and initial chromium concentration. The adsorption model study indicated that Thomas model was in good agreement with the experimental results.
