Abstract

Mechanism of solar drying is the heat transfer by hot air. This study fabricated a small greenhouse solar dryer for banana drying. Its sun facing side designed to be the parabolic curve covering with the clear polycarbonate sheet. The solar absorber at the bottom painted flat black color. There were 3 rounds of experiments with 3 days for each. The initial moisture contents were 235,63, 236.40 and 248.58 %d.b. obtaining final moisture contents of 23.37, 19.16 and 26.38 %d.b., respectively under solar intensity of 543.8 W/m2 and hot air flow rate 0.08 kg/s. The drying rate was averaged of 9.05 kg/h. The mathematical model for drying was formulated.  The equation of Newton and Lewis model was MR =
e-0.1022t (r2 = 0.9784, RMSD = 0.1059, MBD = 0.0112).  The equation of Page model was  (r2 = 0.9592, RMSD = 0.1463, MBD = 0.0214). The equation of Modified Page model was  (r2 = 0.9784, RMSD = 0.1060, MBD = 0.0110). The equation of Henderson and Pabis model was MR = 1.2055e-0.1012t (r2 = 0.9874, RMSD = 0.0832, MBD = 0.0069). The equation of Two Term model was MR = 0.9162e-0.0511t + 0.0110e-0.0511t (r2 = 0.9449, RMSD = 0.1350, MBD = 0.0182). And, the equation of Wang and Singh model was MR = 1 – 0.0633t + 0.0010t2 (r2 = 0.9882, RMSD = 0.0602, MBD = 0.0036). The appropriate mathematical model for banana drying was Wang and Singh model.
