Study of Factors Affecting Secondary School Students? Achievement in Mathematics

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to study and analyze the factors affecting the learning achievement in mathematics. The sample group of this research included 139 students in mathayom three from the Demonstration School of Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University during the first semester in 2012. A questionnaire was used to collect data and cluster random sampling technique utilized in this research. The statistics used in this research included percentage, mean, standard deviation, and stepwise regression analysis. The results of this research revealed that the majority of sample was female students. They spent an average of 30 minutes per day for reviewing mathematic subject. Based on the ratings of the respondents, they gave a medium level to the attitude for mathematic subject. They gave a high level to teaching method, parental responsibility, and overall extra mathematic class. However, they gave a medium level to learning behavior and achievement motive. Factors of prior knowledge, attitude toward mathematics, parental responsibility, extra mathematic class, learning behavior, and achievement motive had a relationship with the achievement of mathematics learning with a 0.05 level of significance. The factors that affecting the achievement of mathematics learning for the secondary school included these factors: prior knowledge, learning behavior and attitude toward mathematics subject.
