Studying Influence of Dimensional Sample of ASTM E8M on Mechanical Properties for Aluminum 6063 Material
Main Article Content
Abstract
Tensile testing is a fundamental and widely accepted process for evaluating the strength of materials. The preparation of testing specimens of aluminum 6063 for ASTM E8M was standard and sub-size sample for the sheet type. According to the testing standards, there are differences in the size of the workpiece. However, a few of studying has indicated on the effect of differences in sample size on the mechanical properties tensile testing. This research aims to evaluate the influence of the sample size of specimen on the mechanical properties and preparation costs with using the wire electric discharge machining process. The experiments were replicated 3 times for any testing conditions. The experiments showed that the standard-sized test pieces had yield stress and maximum stress values of 224.36 and 244.42 N/mm², while the subsize specimens have values of 268.00 and 298.65 N/mm², respectively. The reported stress values for standard and subsize testing specimens were 17.26 and 15.39 percent, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the standard specimen reported the testing results of higher stress more than subsize but the strain represented lower value. However, the prepared specimen of with wire electrical discharge machining process was estimated based on the machining time. The sub-size specimen was reduced the machining time by approximately 49.94 percent. In addition, the raw material volume of subsize sample less required by 75.66 percent compared to testing using standard size of specimen.
