Analysis of the Effects of Machining Processes on the Mechanical Properties of SS400 Carbon Steel
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the effects of machining processes on the mechanical properties and surface quality of SS400 carbon steel. Two manufacturing methods were compared: conventional machining using automated machine tools and Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM). Tensile test specimens were prepared in accordance with the ASTM E8/E8M standard and tested in two rolling directions: parallel to the rolling direction and perpendicular to the rolling direction. The experimental results indicated that the machining processes significantly affected the ultimate tensile strength, elongation, and surface roughness of the material. The specimens produced by WEDM exhibited the highest ultimate tensile strength, whereas those manufactured by conventional machining using automated machine tools showed the highest elongation and the lowest average surface roughness. The findings of this study can serve as a guideline for selecting appropriate machining processes to enhance material performance in industrial applications.
