Effect of TiN Coating on Fatigue Life of SCM 420 Steels Counter Shaft
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aims to evaluate the fatigue life of shafts made of low carbon alloy steel JIS-SCM420 by comparing between oil quenching specimens and titanium nitride (TIN) coated specimens. There are inspections on surface roughness, coating thickness, and R.R. Moore fatigue testing. The average surface roughness (Ra) of oil quenching specimens was 1.089 µm, and that TiN coated specimens was 0.296 µm. The hardness of TIN coated specimens was 246.2 HB, and higher than that of oil quenching which was 67 HB. The increased hardness was due to the addition of titanium nitride, which resulted in finer grain boundaries. The maximum fatigue test cycles of the TIN coated specimens were 2,015,264 cycles and those of the oil quenching specimens were 1,521,942 cycles, which a different of 32.41%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the TIN coated specimens had longer service life than the oil quenching specimens.
